So, there’s a give-away every day here on Killer Characters. Well, that’s hot news and hot is what summer is all about. In fact, hot figures into my next adventure, and I’m not just talking about Chili Showdown security chief Nick Falcone, either.
For one thing, the Chili Showdown is in Las Vegas and I ask you, what could be hotter than that? Answer: Devil’s Breath chili, that’s what.
In case you’ve never heard of it, Devil’s Breath is the hottest of hot chilies and every chef has his or her own version. My dad, Texas Jack Pierce, makes a Devil’s Breath that will make your tastebuds sit up and take notice. Jack Daniel’s whiskey, blackstrap molasses, tequila . . . oh yeah, Jack’s recipe is second to none.
Which doesn’t mean chili cooks everywhere aren’t still trying to show him up. In fact, that’s what our visit to Vegas is all about; the Showdown is hosting a Devil’s Breath contest, looking for the spiciest chili in the hottest town in the USA.
Sounds perfect, right? Well, it actually might have been if one of the contest judges didn’t fall over dead in his bowl of Devil’s Breath, if an evil person from my past didn’t show up and if the Chili Chick hadn’t been kidnaped. The Chick? She’s the gigantic chili pepper costume I wear when I dance outside our pepper stand to attract attention and customers.
Hot? Oh yeah, things in Vegas got plenty hot!
You can help me celebrate the publication of “Death by Devil’s Breath” (Book #2 in the Chili Cook-Off series) this coming August. Just leave a comment on today’s post and you’ll be entered in the Killer Characters drawing to win a copy of “Chili Con Carnage,” the first book in the series. Good luck!

Looks fantastic...

Chili is one of my favorite winter meals but we don't like our chili as hot as you describe. However, I am looking forward to reading this series which is new to me.

Sounds like an interesting read. I bet it's so hot Pepper Martin could make an appearance!
ReplyDeleteHad to laugh at some of the spicy chili comments . . . I'm not a fan of spicy chili, either! My husband is the chili cook and sometimes, he makes a chili hot enough to turn through cement! He hears plenty of complaints about that. His recipes are featured in the books and I didn't have the heart to put in a spicy recipe in "Death by Devil's Breath" so the new book features a chicken chili that's mild enough to appeal to chili sissies like me!
ReplyDeleteThis is a unique book. thanks. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com

This is one series that is at the top of my list! Kylie Logan is a wonderful author. We are very fortunate to have many series to read.
ReplyDeleteNothing better than good food with a great mystery as we go into the fall just imagine a rainy afternoon chilli simmering, bread baking wine chilling. A hand knit afghan wrapped around your out stretched legs resting on a needle point footstool snuggled down in a big arm chair ,by a bright fire
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the first book; looking forward to the second one.
ReplyDeleteI love chili, but for me, it's definitely a fall/winter dish. As I get older, my recipe gets milder, though.
