I try not to worry . . .

Hello everyone ~ I’m Kuan Lee.  I’m an old friend of Julia’s grandmother Gloria and I live in the first floor apartment of her house in North Beach.  I’m a practitioner of Chinese medicine and acupuncture and Gloria is kind enough to let me see clients in my home.  Actually Gloria and Julia Bonatti are really like family and I’m proud to say they consider me in the same way.

Julia confides in me often and I try to give her my best advice but it seems she’s always biting off a lot more than she should in her efforts to help others.  I try to keep my opinions to myself and not say a word to her grandmother because neither one of us wants Gloria to worry.  After all, Julia is her only granddaughter, her only family in fact.
This time I’m quite worried.  She said she had to leave town for a while and head north.  I volunteered to take care of Wizard her cat.  Wizard and I get along fine, but wherever Julia’s off to, it can’t be a good place.  If she doesn’t think her cat is safe, then she’s probably not safe.

Like I said, I try not to worry.  It doesn't do any good for my chi, believe me!  That young woman is capable of making my hair stand on end!  But I do my best not to let her know.  I can't believe some of the scrapes she gets herself into!  I fear for her!

Occasionally she'll hint at a few things.  She likes to use me as a sounding board, but I know she doesn't tell me the half of it.  I have to guess at the rest and do my best to give her some good advice.  For example, why is she staying upstairs at her grandmother's apartment?  Why isn't she home?  What's going on?  I do wonder if it has something to do with her Ask Zodia astrological advice column.  Perhaps she's opened her big mouth (yes, sometimes she can be quite opinionated) and stepped on the wrong toes.

She talks to me because she knows I won't betray a confidence. I won't say anything to her grandmother, who would worry a whole lot more than I do.  For example, the other day she knocked on my door and asked for an acupuncture treatment.  She had wrenched a few muscles and I noticed some cuts and scrapes.  Now why would a young woman in good health, leading a wholesome life, have those injuries?  You tell me!

(Sigh)  Well, I did my best to extract the truth, but to no avail.  I do wish she'd settle down and live a quieter life and not get herself involved in murders!

But here’s the good news!  Killer Characters is having a giveaway this month, starting today, July 15th!  And this post is kicking off the summer event.  My author, Connie di Marco (aka Connie Archer) is giving away a copy of her latest, exciting book -- The Madness of Mercury -- the first book in the Zodiac Mysteries!  Just leave a comment to enter and you can learn  more about me and Julia and everyone else in this series.

And you can visit Connie at her website, Facebook and Twitter @askzodia too!

Hi Grace - I love San Francisco too. It's such a magical city and now, with the Zodiac mysteries I can visit it often, even if only in my mind. Best of luck!

Oh my, I love cozies and love to win stuff, but summer is wafting away or going away at the speed of light! Today we are halfway through July and we have lost almost ten minutes of daylight since the first day of summer. Fairs are in full swing and time marches on!!!

Hi Stephanie - You're so right. I've been noticing the shift of light too. But if you love cozy mysteries, you're in the right place. Good luck!
