I’ve been a doula for significantly more years than I care to admit, which means I’ve seen hundreds of babies make their way into this world. Women have been giving birth as long as the human race has been in existence. Over ninety-nine percent of the time, the process is challenging but uncomplicated. That other one percent? Well, let’s just say I’ve had some tough days at the office.
But I wouldn’t trade my profession for anything. I even train other women to be doulas, which is
how I met Kate.
If what I’ve heard about Kate and her friend Rene is correct, “memorable” will be the least of their problems. I just hope that Kate doesn’t stick her nose into Dr. Dick’s murder. He and I have more of a past than Kate needs to know about. Surely, she’ll be too busy placating Rene to investigate.
Won’t she?
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the important work of a doula, it’s not all that mysterious. According to the American Pregnancy Association: “A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. The doula’s purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience.”
