Reader Survey... have your say!!

Hello Everyone!

Thank you all so very much for answering our first ever survey of cozy mystery readers. We were gratified by how many of you took the time to answer!

Check out the responses in the bar graph below. And again... thank you all so very much!

The overwhelming favorite reason for reading cozy mystery series is that when you read a new entry in a series, it is like visiting with old friends! We feel that way about all of you, too!

    Interesting list. But for all my reads I avoid violence, sex, off-color language. Paranormal, supernatural, witches, etc. Read several genres.

    There are so many great reasons to read cozy mysteries and to find a new series and new authors. I am glad that we didn't have to pick just one on the list.

    I like multiple suspects with some red herringa. I like pets, especially dogs, as main characters. Don't care so much for romance in them.

    I look for fun characters in quirky settings. Returning to a series is like meeting up with good friends for a little vacation. I try to make it that way in the series I write too!

    I read because i love to read, not to drown out my normal, everyday life. I don't care for romance in cozy reads, but a little is ok. I do like pets. mostly cats, but not as the main characters.I do like cooking cozies, love the recipes! I like most all the "hobby" type cozies. Language does not bother me and actually gore doe not bother me. I like multiple suspects and love red herrings. I do like "witchy, supernatural,paranormal cozies. I do read reviews, however..they do not make or break a book for me and yes, i do read the back covers and first couple of pages, before I by a book. if the author is new to me.

    I'll admit it--I'm a bookaholic. I love to read cozies because most of them make me laugh, and that's important to me. I love the cooking and craft or hobby cozies, as well as the paranormal ones. One thing that makes or breaks a book for me, though, is the editing. I will no longer buy a book from an author new to me if it is from an independent press because of several bad experiences with HUGE plot holes and glaring grammatical errors that pull me out of the story with a jarring "thud"!

    I think I could check every box and I do love my cozies from cover to back of the book. I read other kinds of books, just not as many, and often need 2 or 3 cozies to get me in a happy place after a non cozy.RUTH NIXON

    I primarily like cozies because I can read them in 1 day; no gratuitous violence, gore or explicit sex; especially like libraries, cats, cooking and stores: books, flea, fabrics, etc. The heroines are usually working people who have faced trials in their own lives that make them vulnerable and interesting and relateable. Must have humor, too! Recipes and patterns are always nice. Especially like: Kate Carlisle, Maddie Day, Sofie Ryan. My other mystery author isn't really cozy, but LOVE Donna Andrews!

    I love a bit of humor in my cozies as well as all the other great things that are in them. Another reason I read them is the wonderful writing!

    The main attraction to cozies is they are mostly lighthearted. No extreme violence or erotic sex or politics! There is too much violence and political maneuvering in the news. Don’t need any more in books. Cozies tend to be written by and about women, which is an amazing transformation in the literary world. Once...not that long ago...women had to use a man’s name, or her initials to gain entry into publishing. Times are a-changing. Bravo cozy authors! Keep writing what we like to read!

    My only problem with the survey is there are too many correct answers for me. I love cozies for lots of reasons.

    I love to read cozies because of the characters. You usually have the main sleuth, their best friend(s)not family, and a cast of regulars that make up the town or local setting. A great cozy series continues to develop the characters and the storylines as the new novels come out, and it’s always a pleasure to spend time with these characters in each new book. I look forward to new releases in my favorite cozy series, which are like a visit with an old friend.

    I enjoy reading cozies because it is like visiting with old friends and it reminds me of the mystery series I read as a kid-Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden! Some authors really create an entire world with characters I'd love to be friends with.

    Cozies are about small towns and simple friends, families, no big fancy, dancy people, if there is their usually murdered..lol Not hardly one cozy I read that doesn't have a pet in them..love animals and love reading about them. No explicit sex or gory blood even in the murders. I try to solve the murders along with the characters and their smarter than me.
