One of the first times I visited my mother at her new retirement home in Sunshine Palms on the west coast of Florida we spent a few days lounging on the gorgeous sands of the Gulf of Mexico in a sweet little town called Fort Myers Beach. Each morning we had breakfast in the cutest little cafe/bookstore, called, appropriately enough, The Read 'Em and Eat. The owners, Sassy Cabot and Bridgy Mayfield, were such terrific ladies that by the time mom and I left, we were all friends on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.
Well, when Sassy heard about the adventure I had on my most recent visit to Sunshine Palms for mom's birthday, she thought it was just the kind of story her author would love to write. The next thing I knew "Flamingo Bingo" was the cover story of Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine and there was my name in print for all the world to see.

I have fond memories of playing BINGO as some of our school fundraisers. It's a fun game for the young to the young at heart. I don't think it's the idea of prizes as much as beating everyone else in the luck of the draw on cards and the fate of having your numbers drawn first.

ReplyDeleteIn a 3 room school house on Lancey Street I first saw the game of Bingo. As a 1st grader I watched the Big Kids in 2nd & 3rd grade playing this game at our combined indoor recess during our Maine winters. Once I knew my letters and numbers, then I got to join them, too. What fun then as I could shout "Bingo" and read back my winning row. It's then I learned about diagonal, 4 corners, cover your card...all beyond the Basic Bingo. Fast forward to my teaching 1st grade and teaching my little ones the rules and concentration needed to play this indoor winter recess game. Bingo is a rite of passage and fun for all! ReplyDeleteBingo makes me think of a dear aunt, who just loved it. Unfortunately she used winniing at bingo as part of her budget planning until her daughters stepped in. Whenever she would win she would tell them, see, I told you it's my time. She was a hoot.

ReplyDeleteMy daughter (10 years old then) would visit my mother on Sundays and often got asked to call the bingo game. When we asked if she liked doing that, she replied, "No." We explained that she didn't have to do it. "Oh yes I do. Grandma would be very disappointed if I didn't!"

I loved Bingo when my mother was alive. It really was her game and she loved to go and play -- we had an agreement that we split any winnings and she won almost every time we went!

Bingo is one of those games that all ages can play. It's a great way for little ones to learn their numbers while seniors can stimulate their brain by playing the game. ReplyDeleteBingo! My friend and I try to do bingo when we have free time! We did one a few weeks ago, where everything was donated..all the proceeds went to a family to help a youngster with some serious medical needs. I won a huge basket of ceramics to paint...20. Pieces in all! And a gift certificate. And we were told the family has met their goal of what was needed to obtain the treatment. We used to go monthly to one held as a fundraiser for another organization...but they discontinued them. One I will never go to...is one I saw advertised on anmoutside sign at one of the lodges near here...called gun bingo....for me..thats just wrong...but thismis hunting country...and my views are not everybodys.. so no disrespect... it's just not for me.

I always went with my grandmother to play bingo, on the weekends..she'd go every night if she could and she won a lot. She and her neighbor would always partner up, so if 1 won, they both did, they'd split the winnings. It was always great fun! I still do play every once in a while. nani_geplcs(at)yahoo(dot)com

ReplyDeleteI played bingo at festivals, but either they don't have those festivals anymore or the one they do have doesn't have bingo anymore. So I get my bingo fix by playing it on my tablet. I have three bingo games.
