Flowers for Mother's Day

by Emily Westhill from the Deputy Donut Mysteries by Ginger Bolton

I was born and raised in Fallingbrook, Wisconsin, and except for college, I have lived here all my life. Now I run a donut and coffee shop, Deput Donut, with my late husband's father, Tom. He and his wife Cindy are like a second set of parents.

My own parents spend only some of July and August in Wisconsin. Their home is an RV that they drive to Florida at the first sign that a chill might hit the air. They return only when they're sure that northern Wisconsin won't be cold for them.

If they were here for Mother's Day, they could join Tom, Cindy, and me for my annual Mother's Day barbecue.

It might rain here on Sunday.

No matter the weather, I'll bake Cindy a cake and we'll have a delicious and companionable dinner.

I've mailed a card to my mother. Living in an RV, she doesn't want things, so I've had some coffees and chocolates sent to her.

And I'm sending her and everyone, whether we're mothers or not, this virtual tour of Monet's Garden in Giverney, France.

For our Killer Characters Spring Fling giveaway, Ginger will send a winner her choice of one of the first three Deputy Donut Mysteries:

SURVIVAL OF THE FRITTERS

GOODBYE CRULLER WORLD

or

JEALOUSY FILLED DONUTS

In the comments below, tell us about your favorite flower(s), disguise your email address from the spambots, and Ginger will choose a winner by random. Please enter by midnight, Mothers' Day, May 10. Happy reading!

  14. I have three favorite flowers and all very appropriate for this Mother's Day weekend.

The first one is hydrangea which remind me of my Granny that grew them. As a little girl I can remember getting to pick one on our visit. My Granny would say "Honey one of these makes a whole bouquet."

The second is sweet peas that remind me of my Mom. They were one of her favorite flowers to grow. I can still see them in my mind's eye growing up the entire side of the garage climbing up the strings that were hanging from the eaves to the ground. They smelled heavenly too.

The third isn't really a type of flower, but rather a color. I love all shades of purple flowers because they remind me of our daughter. Even as a small child, she loved "burple". It's also my favorite color and when I grow flowers of that color I can feel Jenet close to me in my heart and in my mind.

All three have gone on to their heavenly home, but they stay with me through the flowers and colors that they so adored. So on this Mother's Day weekend, I fondly remember the Mom's in my life and little precious girl that made me one.

Thank you for the fabulous opportunity to win one of the Deputy Donut Mysteries series books!

Please be safe, stay healthy and have a little adventure along the way.

  33. I’m really looking forward to your next book especially with “BOSTON” in the title. My favorite flowers are lilacs. They bring back the most amazing childhood memories especially. But I have many favorite flowers besides lilacs and one would be Forsythia which I really thought were named “For CYNTHIA’s” as my parents told me and which they called them when I was a child. Every time I see them I think of my wonderful childhood!

Wishing you all the best. Stay safe!
